2012 NFL Draft Order: 3 Teams That Should Trade Down in the Draft

Adam SpencerJan 1, 2012

The 2012 NFL Draft order is starting to come together.

The top two picks will belong to the Indianapolis Colts and the St. Louis Rams. After that, it is a little bit murkier and we need to wait for the playoffs to be over to know the definite order.

It's not too early to see which teams would benefit from trading down in the first round of the draft. Let's take a look at three teams that might want to consider moving down a few spots.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts still have Peyton Manning. Manning still has three or four good seasons in him. Drafting Andrew Luck would be a waste of time for Luck and money for the Colts. They have bigger needs to fill.

Plus, there will be a couple teams that want to trade up to grab Luck.

The Colts should trade down and get a king's ransom in future draft picks and possibly even players. That way they can build around Manning and Reggie Wayne and Dwight Freeney.

That nucleus is good enough to win the AFC South for the next three years. So let's hold off on the rebuilding talk for a while.

St. Louis Rams

The Rams need a solid wide receiver to pair with Brandon Lloyd (who they also need to resign) and some help in the secondary.

If they trade down, they can get multiple picks and still could probably grab Alshon Jeffery, the big South Carolina wide receiver.

That would be a best-case scenario for the Rams. The difference between Justin Blackmon and Jeffery isn't worth using the second overall pick on Blackmon.

The Rams need a lot more talent to put around Sam Bradford. Trading the No. 2 pick would be a good start.

Washington Redskins

The Redskins aren't in a good situation right now. They'll have too low of a first-round pick to draft either Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III.

The best they can hope for is Landry Jones, and they should stay away from him. Jones looks like he might be 2012's Blaine Gabbert, a guy who was drafted way too high in the first round.

A good move for the Redskins would be to trade down and take Ryan Tannehill later in the first round. But we shouldn't count on Dan Snyder to make a good move.
