NHL Winter Classic 2012: A Matchup That Really Means Something

James ReedDec 31, 2011

The NHL Winter Classic is an exciting game every year.

The 2008 snow game between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins and 2009's Detroit Red Wings victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Wrigley Field come to mind.

But this year's 2012 NHL Winter Classic carries more than just high entertainment value.

Both teams want this game badly.

The Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers are tied for the Atlantic division lead with 48 points, and each is only one point behind the Eastern Conference leading Boston Bruins.

Both teams underwent significant changes to their roster in an effort to win the 2012 Stanley Cup.  The Rangers went out and signed this season's top free agent, Brad Richards.

They certainly are getting their $60 million dollars worth this season.

Philadelphia turned over half their roster during the offseason, including dealing away their very identity in Mike Richards and Jeff Carter.

Simmonds, Jagr, Bryzgalov, Voracek and Talbot were all added to the roster.  The early returns were unsteady in Philly, but the team is on puck now.

When this old-school rivalry takes the ice on Monday, Jan. 2, the lead in the division, a mental edge and bragging rights for the 2012 Winter Classic will be on the line.

My prediction:  Flyers 3, Rangers 2

The game-winning goal will be a flukey one where Henrik Lundqvist is blinded by the sun while trying to make a crucial late game save.
