Armed Forces Bowl 2011: BYU's Antics Prove Bowl Season is Truly Special

Gabe ZaldivarDec 30, 2011

And this is why we never want bowl season to go away.

Much has been made about the plethora of bowl games. I count myself as one of those staunch believers that feel so many bowl games is complete overkill.

I will wake up tomorrow and fend off a hangover of college football delights and remember what I hate about this time of year.

For a moment though, we were all enamored.

Forget BCS melodrama or calls for a playoff system at the end of the year. On Friday afternoon, we had college football, and all was right in the world.

The Armed Forces Bowl is hardly a perennial destination game for fans.

We don't sit around and talk about where we are all going to watch this thing. Yet, it typified what's great about college football. BYU used a trick play and some passionate players going all out to win on Friday.

Everyone not a Tulsa supporter was pleased. Two plays will stick out for years to come. Riley Nelson took a snap in the red zone and had to scramble to the left to avoid an oncoming attack.

In the melee, 305-pound offensive tackle Matt Reynolds was thrown to the ground and had his helmet ripped off.

Most would have called it a day, but not this amateur athlete, who got back to his feet and threw an amazing block. It gave Nelson enough time to get the throw off. All the while, Reynolds had no helmet on.

And of course, what college football game would be complete without a little trickeration?

The last play saw Nelson snap the ball in an apparent attempt to spike the ball. Instead, he threw a strike to Cody Hoffman for a touchdown and the win.

And just like that, the bowl season had won me over once again. With plays like that, there is no reason to tweak any of part of this amazing time of year.
