UFC 141 Results: What Needs to Go Right for a Brock Lesnar Win

Tim McTiernanDec 30, 2011

In tonight's main event, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will face off against former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem.

These two each have their clear strengths in the fight. Lesnar will want to get the fight to the ground, and Overeem will want to keep the fight on the feet.

With that being said, there are a few things that would need to go right for Lesnar to pull out the win over "The Reem."

First of all, Lesnar has to make sure not to get caught by Overeem at the start of the fight. An early punch that connects from Reem, and that could be it.

If Lesnar gets hit and can't recover fast enough, Overeem can simply swarm him and end the fight violently.

Second, Lesnar should display "controlled aggression." In his last fight against Cain Velasquez at UFC 121, Lesnar came out guns blazing, going a thousand miles an hour. He threw flying knees, backfists, and even the kitchen sink at Cain.

It did not work out well, as Lesnar gassed out quickly. He can't do that against Reem, or he will get caught, and get knocked out.

Finally, Lesnar has to complete the shot against Overeem, while avoiding the knees and guillotine choke.

It is well known that Alistair Overeem has outstanding knees, which he can use to counter takedown attempts.

If Lesnar gets hit with one of those, it could be a rough—and quick—night.

Additionally, Overeem is known for his lethal guillotine choke, and he has submitted six opponents with it. Lesnar has to be sure not to get caught in that position, lest he become the seventh of Overeem's opponents to lose in that fashion.

But, if Lesnar completes the shot, and can get the side control position that he likes, he could overpower Overeem, and earn the TKO victory.
