Why CM Punk Is So Fun to Watch on WWE Monday Night Raw

David LevinDec 31, 2011

He's like the guy next door. The one who has all the questions already answered by they are asked. He is the life of the party, the one you want to hang out with and the one you wish you were more like.

If CM Punk was anything else, maybe he would give Linda McMahon a run for her money with the political vote. Right now, it is Punk we all want to see he, hear and know what is on his mind.

While CM Punk's road to the spot he is in right now has been crooked, uneven and sometimes way too controversial. We like it that way.

Punk is the Roddy Piper and Randy Savage of the new generation, the wrestler who can dazzle us with his ability, speak the right things and fight the cutting edge. Punk and John Cena are Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan of the modern era.

But there are reasons why Punk is fun to watch. The era before him was as unconventional as wrestling had ever been. He is a free thinker in the mold of a Nick Bockwinkle. He is also a wild card much like the wrestlers of the mid 1980s when you were not sure what there next move would be.

CM Punk is everything that is good about the wrestling business. The charisma, the drama and the heat he brings each week and generates is what we have been missing. you don't see that in  John Cena, or Randy Orton or even someone like and Edge or Christian.

The Miz could be that good. Dolph Ziggler in time will be that good and R-Truth gives us some great moments but he is not the charismatic one we hope for.

There is a huge gap between maybe three or four wrestlers in this company and the rest of the lot. And then, there is Punk.

When MITB started to unravel and we saw the "shoot" heard round the world, we saw the genius of Phil Brooks. I wasn't a follower before, and as I saw the interview for what it was, I saw brilliance that made the old NWA the foundation of what wrestling was.

As the true fans, we love that drama and that commitment to the craft. While his character is not as undefined as it was a few months ago, his ability to drag us in from the couch and become part of the show makes it brilliant. It isn't The Rock or Steve Austin or even the cold drone of the Undertaker. But is the best thing going today.

Right now, the WWE has a real chance to break out with great talent like Miz, R-Truth, Ziggler and Sheamus. The character brand will be important because while the company is leading the charge, TNa is trying to make its mark. Obviously, the two are not the same. They never will.

But while WWE is the lead anchor, it is only as good as the wrestlers who bring their raw talent each night.

For the first time in nearly a decade, we have a wrestler in Punk who can link what we saw to what we are seeing and hopefully what we will see in this business. That is what makes him so much fun to watch each week,
