Lesnar vs. Overeem: Bold Predictions for Epic UFC 141 Superfight

Brian MaziqueDec 29, 2011

Alistair Overeem vs. Brock Lesnar—these are two of the biggest names in the sport, in the most glamorized weight class, but only one of them is ready to perform at that level.

Alistair Overeem has been waiting to get his shot in the UFC; he acknowledged Dana White's company is the premier MMA organization in the world. Now he gets a shot to chase the heavyweight crown in the UFC.

Brock Lesnar is perhaps the biggest name in MMA, despite having only seven fights. He proved himself with a demolition of Frank Mir in a rematch, and by outlasting Shane Carwin in a defense. In his last fight, he was trounced by the since unseated Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Lesnar did not look right to me, physically or mentally. He seemed to lack the killer instinct. It is understandable, as Lesnar has fought two bouts with the intestinal disease, diverticulitis. His most recent brush with the disorder was seven months ago.

Lesnar says he is healthy and ready to go. I'm not sure I believe him. This sport can be scary if you aren't prepared mentally, even for a beast like Lesnar. I don't think Lesnar will have the aggression required to handle Overeem.

Overeem has the edge in the stand up game, and is well schooled on the ground and as a submission artist to avoid danger from Lesnar on the ground. Lesnar's only shot to win this fight is to take it to the ground. The longer they stand and trade, the more likely it is that Overeem will turn out his lights.

I couldn't have imagined saying that two years ago, but inactivity and illness make Lesnar primed for a hard fall.

Lesnar has been evasive about prospects of him returning to the WWE, but after this match, I think it would be best.

Overeem will win by first-round KO.
