Junior dos Santos Doesn't Want to Avenge Nogueira's Loss Against Frank Mir

Mike HodgesDec 29, 2011

After witnessing his mentor Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira lose in devastating fashion to Frank Mir at UFC 140, UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos doesn't intend on exacting revenge on the Las Vegas native anytime soon.

The Brazilian was at a charity event, promoted by the UFC, to help raise awareness for the "It Ain't Chemo" association. Mir was in attendance along with UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and Roy Nelson.

Dos Santos spoke to TATAME.com following the event and he said he holds no grudge against Mir regarding the outcome of his bout with "Minotauro."

"I just think it was a complicated fight for all Brazilians, mainly for us at Team Nogueira," dos Santos said. "He (Rodrigo) had the win in his hands and with Frank Mir knocked out in front of him, and, for some reason, he didn’t keep punching him, he tried to fit a guillotine choke and Frank Mir was lucky enough to grab his arm, and grabbed the chance when he had one.”

"Cigano" is coming off the biggest win of his career after knocking out Cain Velasquez to capture the UFC heavyweight title. Although he is recovering from knee surgery, dos Santos is expected to make his first title defense against the winner of this weekend's main event between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem. The champion will be heavily invested in the bout, as he will be sitting cage-side to watch the action.

Dos Santos said he is confident that Nogueira will return some time next year, but he doesn't want to avenge the loss to Mir. However, he wouldn't pass up the chance to fight the former UFC heavyweight champion should the opportunity present itself in the future.

“I don’t need to revenge him. I guess there’s no such thing," he said. "But I confess I have never picked out opponents and I won’t, but if someday I fight Frank Mir, absolutely it’d be an interesting fight.”
