UFC 141 Fight Card: How Alistair Overeem Will Demolish Brock Lesnar

Nedu ObiDec 29, 2011

At UFC 141, two monumental forces collide—kickboxing sensation and lethal striker Alistair Overeem vs. NCAA division-I standout and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

The bottom line is this:

Something’s gotta give, and it sure as hell ain’t gonna be “The Demolition Man.”

First and foremost, Overeem cannot and should not let his UFC debut get the better of him—his focus and composure are the essential ingredients to up-ending Lesnar.

This is how Overeem’s victory pans out:

Opening Round

1 of 4

Once the opening bell sounds for proceedings to get underway, it’s a sure-fire guarantee that Lesnar will be rushing towards Overeem akin to a runaway train, as has been his normal modus operandi in the octagon.

This leaves “The Reem” with two choices—meet the wrecking-train head on and unleash fire with fire, or distance himself from the oncoming hulk whilst deftly and systematically detonating his own brand of punishment.

Either way, he’s got the diversified skill-set to end the bout right there and then.

Alistair Overeem’s Striking

2 of 4

If the fight remains standing after the initial onslaught, Overeem will use his superior striking ability to decimate Lesnar. His Muay-Thai clinches have also proven deadly in the past, and he's known for unleashing vicious knees to his hapless opponents.

Overeem is a renowned kickboxer with above-average boxing skills.

As Lesnar has an acute aversion to being hit, Overeem will gladly oblige tenfold and then some.

When the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion connects on Lesnar’s chin, which he will do, this fight will be in the history books.

Still, if Lesnar goes in for the double-leg takedown, he just might be unfortunate enough to eat a knee or two—that right there is a done deal.

Alistair Overeem’s Ground Game

3 of 4

Lesnar made references to the fact that no one is immune to his takedowns.

“There hasn't been anybody in the UFC that I haven't been able to take down.”

Overeem has some good takedown defense, so expect some serious sprawling from the muscle-laden powerhouse.

Still, if for some reason he does succeed in taking the Dutchman to the ground, the latter should fret not.

Even though Overeem doesn’t like fighting off his back the same way Lesnar doesn’t like a punch to his grill, he’s got the submission skills to make things extremely difficult and uncomfortable for the former WWE performer.

He’s no slouch on the ground either—if he can reverse positions, Lesnar might find himself on the receiving end of some demolishing ground-and-pound.

Worthy of note is the fact that Overeem has successfully executed 19 submissions—eight via guillotine choke (two by way of standing).

Also, it’s not set in stone that Lesnar will be able to keep Overeem on the canvas once he’s got him there, as was the case with Cain Velasquez in their championship bout.

As Lesnar pointed out, “the issue is we just have to be able to keep them there [on the ground].”

This time, Lesnar will be facing a combatant who’s equal in size and as strong as, or even stronger, than he is.

If Overeem manages to get back to his feet, then it’s more or less over for the DeathClutch-trained fighter.

Apart from the obvious, his confidence would’ve taken a massive blow.

End Result

Lesnar might be a former UFC heavyweight champion with two successful title defenses to his name, but against Overeem, he’ll be encountering a seasoned mixed-martial-arts campaigner who’s bought the hat and worn the t-shirt.

Truth be told, we the viewing public are not privy to what game plan Overeem is set to bring into the octagon come fight night, but whatever it is, it’s bound to result in victory at UFC 141.

Overeem takes this in Round 1.

UFC 141 is set for Dec. 30, 2011 at the MGM Grand Gardens Arena, Las Vegas, Nev.
