NFL Picks Week 17: Looking at Heavy Favorites That Will Stomp Opposition

Zach KruseDec 29, 2011

In Week 17 of the NFL season, the following favorites should stop their opposition:

Atlanta Falcons (-11.5) over Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Deep down, the Falcons may savor the opportunity to go back to New Orleans during the Wild Card Round for a rematch with the Saints. They certainly had plenty to say about Drew Brees' attempt at breaking the passing yards record up big in the fourth quarter on Monday, so maybe that does fuel their want for a rematch.

But in reality, the Falcons should go after the No. 5 seed (thus avoiding a trip to the Superdome) with everything they have. That starts with a win over the Bucs on Sunday, plus a loss from the Detroit Lions in Green Bay. The Bucs haven't put up much of a fight in recent weeks.

San Francisco 49ers (-10.5) over St. Louis Rams

While sitting comfy at 12-3, the 49ers still have a lot to play for. Another win locks up a first-round bye and the No. 2 seed in the NFC, so don't expect them to take it easy on their 2-13 division rivals. I'd be surprised if the Rams, who have scored just 166 points this season, crack double digits against the 49ers defense.

New England Patriots (-11) over Buffalo Bills

Yes, I know the Bills beat the Patriots earlier this season. But let's be honest, the Bills team that walks out of the tunnel in New England on Sunday will be a shell of the one that upset the Patriots back in Week 3. Buffalo has won just three games since starting 3-0.

The Patriots, on the other hand, are one win away from home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady won't let off the gas in this rematch.
