Kevin Durant Video: Watch Durant Explain Altercation with Russell Westbrook
Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant attempted to defuse the highly-publicized confrontation between himself and point guard Russell Westbrook during an interview with NBA TV. The teammates got into a shouting match during a timeout on Wednesday night.
A video of Durant's low-key response is embedded above.
Last season's NBA scoring champ was supportive of Westbrook throughout the interview, saying they are regularly the first two guys to show up each morning and that both are committed to winning more than anything else.
In reality, the entire situation was blown out of proportion. When two players have as much competitive fire as Durant and Westbrook, tensions are running high throughout the entire game. They usually don't lash out at each other, though, which is why it became news.
Both players think they know what is best for the team and have no problem expressing those thoughts. They obviously disagreed about how Westbrook handled a minor incident with Thabo Sefolosha and, in the heat of the moment, just snapped.
Even though it's still early in the season, emotions run high during games. This isn't the first time the pair has had a disagreement, and it certainly won't be the last.
It won't be a situation that will have any lasting effects on the team. They even went on to win last night's game despite the hoopla and a brutal shooting game from Westbrook. Winning cures all problems and that's no different here, as evidenced by Durant's interview.
As long as the frustrations don't carry over to the locker room and practices, the Thunder will continue to prove they are a serious Western Conference contender. They are already 3-0 and have the type of depth it will take to survive the current condensed season.
Durant and Westbrook just need to chalk this one up as water under the bridge and start preparing for tonight's clash with the Dallas Mavericks.
