Dwyane Wade and Erik Spoelstra's Big Mouths Detrimental to the Miami Heat
The media hype has done a very good job of helping Dwyane Wade believe something that just isn't true: that he is some unworldly closer of basketball games.
I will leave that discussion for another day, but for now, I just want to comment on the wisdom of Wade and coach Erik Spoelstra sharing with the world that the last shot of the comeback win for the Heat on Wednesday night was designed for Wade.
How can this be good for the team, and specifically for LeBron James? His coach and his teammate are not helping him.
If the last shot goes to Wade, then take the shot, young man, and celebrate with your team.
Instead, Wade wanted everyone to know that he was the closer on the Heat, and apparently his coach agrees. In sharing every single detail of the last shot with the media, Wade signaled to the world that he is the man in Miami (he scored 10 points to LeBron's 35). It was an effort to reclaim his throne, if you will, as the king in South Beach.
A true teammate and leader focused on team chemistry would not have made the comments Wade made after the game.
James needs to understand that Spoelstra and Wade are operating from a different script than he is. Spoelstra buys into the "LeBron cannot close" argument and therefore defers to Wade, who is an inferior player to James.
Wade, on the other hand, buys into this myth of "players who have won titles are better and special," making him better than James.
Let's put this myth to bed right now.
Last year, each player and team that had won a title or titles previously, lost. So for all of their special powers, title winners in San Antonio, Los Angeles, Boston and yes, Miami were defeated by non-title holders.
There is nothing special about the players that have won titles; what's special are the great players that have surrounded them.
I hope LeBron can stay focused while his "teammate" and head coach loudly proclaim to the world that he does not have what it takes.
P.S., Coach Spoelstra, don't fall in love with your substitution routine.
