UFC 141 Fight Card: Alistair Overeem All Talk and No Walk?

Any suggestions that Dutch heavyweight Alistair Overeem is all talk and no walk should be swiftly dispelled, as he has the credentials to prove otherwise.

The reason why all this talk-and-walk malarkey has come to the fore is due to Overeem’s recent vocal assessments of Brock Lesnar (his weaknesses), and how he’ll exploit them to the fullest.

“If you guys think Cain Velasquez hits hard, wait until you see what I'm gonna do to him (Lesnar).”

“Brock doesn't like to get hit, and that's exactly what I'm gonna do to him. I'm gonna hit him," Overeem said. "I'm gonna hit him as hard as I can. I'm pretty good at it.”

“I'm gonna beat Brock up, and it's gonna take me no more than two rounds," he said. "I'll put my mind on the first round, but I can guarantee the second,” Overeem told UFC.com.

Conversely, the above comments tell me one thing—the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion is self-assured of eradicating the one obstacle blocking his path to UFC gold, and nothing else.

How apropos are his bravado and the assumption that he can’t or won’t back it up—well, rather than watch by the sidelines and idly twiddle his thumbs for an eventual matchup with current UFC heavyweight champion Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos, Overeem as an alternative, took the bull by the horns, and what emerged was his fellow gigantean Lesnar.

Some might say the opposition he’s faced was nothing less than low to mid-tier fighters.

Whether they’re right or wrong, the fact remains he’s riding a 10-fight win streak—five via submission and four by way of KO.

How many fighters have simultaneously held two titles in MMA and K-1 kickboxing?

How about a guy who was willing to continue competing in K-1 whilst vying for UFC gold, until Dana White and Co. made him an offer he couldn’t refuse?

To suggest that a person of the caliber of Overeem, and with everything he’s accomplished in the fight game, is all talk and no trousers would be asinine at best.

“The Reem” will prove on fight night that he can talk a good game and as well as fight one.
