Jon Gruden: NFL Rules Expert Mike Pereira Must Mind His Own Business

Andrew KulhaDec 29, 2011

NFL rules expert and FOX rules analyst Mike Pereira apparently really doesn't like former NFL coach and current Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden, and that's an understatement.

Anytime you use the word loudmouth and blowhard to describe a guy, and then say he butchered his job, there's a good chance that you really mean what you're saying.

This wasn't Pereira just making a passing comment or a funny joke, I'm pretty sure he really meant what he is saying here in his recent column on foxsports.com:

I am not a fan of Gruden’s. Not today, not yesterday, not when I worked for the NFL and not when I was working on the field as a side judge. He was a loudmouth as a coach who constantly disrespected officials and he is a blowhard in the broadcast booth who spouts off when he doesn’t know what he is talking about.

I respect his knowledge about the X’s and O’s when it comes to coaching and playing the game of football, but I have very little respect for him when it comes to officiating and his knowledge of the rules.

"

He then went on to describe how Gruden "butchered" two plays in the Falcons-Saints game, going as far to say that as an announcer Gruden is obligated to know the rules.

While the last statement couldn't be more true—just check out any of Bleacher Report national lead writer Dan Levy's Jon Gruden MNF Fact Check for proof of the statement—Pereira needs to mind his own business here.

I can only speak for myself, so that's all I will do.

Personally, I can't stand Pereira.

Every weekend FOX trots him out onto their broadcasts whenever a questionable call has been made on the field, and I swear to you almost 50-percent of the time the guy is wrong.

He comes out and guarantees that a call will be overturned, and of course it's not. Or, completely agrees with the call on the field, and then it get's overturned.

Listen, I understand that part of our jobs in the sporting world is to be bold and take a stance, and often times we end up being wrong about that stance. It just comes with the territory.

Pereira just needs to keep his mouth shut in this instance, though.

He has no room to put a guy like Gruden on blast and he needs to mind his own business.

Gruden may not know what he's doing in the booth, but for many that's what makes him so entertaining. In the end, though, there is no doubting that he knows the game of football.

Sure, does he goof up from time-to-time, yes. To be fair to him, though, who can understand the NFL's take on rules anyhow?

They change their stance more times then you'd change your clothes for a first date.

Gruden may not understand all the rules in the NFL, but I'm okay with it. He's won a Super Bowl, and he makes me laugh.

That's more than I could say for Pereira.
