Rasmus Elm Is 1 of 6 Players Who Would Put Tottenham into Title Contention

Conor QueenanDec 28, 2011

Harry Redknapp, I'm sure, will have a delightful New Year celebration. By the time 2012 comes around, Tottenham could be seven points ahead of their London neighbors, Chelsea.

Redknapp has forged an elegantly balanced side that has exceeded expectations in the first half of the season. A midfield, consisting of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, which epitomises this balance is possibly the best in the league.

A forward line with the eccentric Adebayor and clinical Defoe may be lacking depth but it is still nonetheless deadly. Most importantly, Spurs are short two players of a premier defence.

Some top-class players may bring Tottenham to the next level, title contention.

1. Rasmus Elm

Tottenham, minus Aaron Lennon, are playing with a 'three' in centre midfield. This magnifies the lack of depth in this department.

Rasmus Elm has previously been linked to Manchester United but it now looks like Tottenham are set to snap up the 23-year-old Sweden International.

Elm would provide relief to the golden duo of Scott Parker and Modric. He could potentially be the Modric of a Sandro-Elm twosome in midfield.

2. James McCarthy

When FC Barcelona come knocking at the age of 14, you can assume you are decently talented. McCarthy subsequently stayed in Scotland and has began to forge a career far away from the sunny shores of Catalonia.

If a deal for Elm was to fall through, McCarthy would be the next best available option. The Ireland midfielder incorporates a mixture of tenacity and deftness, perfect for the Premier League.

One for the future no doubt.

3. Jan Vertonghen

With some top-class teams such as Manchester United and FC Barcelona unwilling to spend in January, Tottenham may be able to swoop in and snatch up this Belgian centre-back.

Captain of Ajax, Vertonghen is a defender very much in the mould of compatriot Vincent Kompany. He would be a vital addition to the depleted defence of Tottenham.

All Premier League champions have had exceptional defences. Vertonghen could elevate Tottenham to close to that position.

4. Angelo Ogbonna

Playing in Serie B might be a turn-off for some but this Italian defender is one brimming with a quality.

In 2009, a deal to bring Ogbonna to Arsenal fell through, but now Tottenham would be wise to sign the Torino man. A 6'2" defender is quite welcome at the heart of the Spurs' defence and Ogbonna would slot right in.

5. Carlos Tevez

5 of 6

If Tottenham could somehow pry Tevez away from the grasp of Milan, many would fancy Spurs to go on and really compete for the title.

A player with immense quality, even if it was a "till end of season" loan, the North London side would have received one of the best footballers in Europe.

6. Stevan Jovetic

6 of 6

More of a creative forward than a goal scorer, Jovetic fell off the radar last year when he picked up a season-ending injury in a preseason friendly.

Jovetic would be the perfect foil for Adebayor. Redknapp would be able to rotate his forward players with a lot more ease, allowing Van der Vaart a rest when needed.
