What's At Stake?
St. John's can only hope to bring an end to an inconsistent 2011 with what would be a marvelous upset.
For UConn, they can only bank on beating up St. John's and slowly rising up the rankings. They will need a great deal more wins to make up for a November 25th loss to UCF.
What They're Saying
USA Today reports on the power and prestige that is UConn head coach Jim Calhoun. "Calhoun's status shows that identifying power coaches isn't always a matter of just following the money. In Calhoun's case, it's also about success without regional precedent, the number of competitors in the local marketplace and the value of exposure."
Lenn Robbins of The New York Post reports on the emergence of Moe Harkless. "Harkless, the freshman sensation from Queens, hit 14 of 17 shots from the field, including 2 of 3 from behind the arc, and grabbed 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double to eclipse Iverson and Murphy, each of whom had 30 points in their freshman Big East debuts."
St. John's Player to Watch
St. John's freshman phenom Moe Harkless leads the team in scoring and rebounding. If the Red Storm are going to shock the Huskies, it will have to come with another great game from the budding young star.
UConn Player to Watch
It's hard to look past what Jeremy Lamb gives the Huskies, but I can't help but love Shabazz Napier. When the sophomore is on, there is hardly a defense that can stop him.
Key Matchup
UConn should control this game from the tip. But Calhoun's team does have a way of letting up against lesser opponents as they did against Fairfield who cam storming back to a near-upset on December 22nd. The Huskies simply have to maintain the intensity.
Prediction
UConn 84, St. John's 78
