Miami Heat Rumors: Signing Gilbert Arenas Vital with Chalmers' Suspect Preseason
Dwyane Wade is trapped on an island in the Miami Heat back-court, in need of a supporting cast to help deepen the bench.
According to ESPN.com, shooting guard Gilbert Arenas is looking for a place to play, and has issued a wish list which includes the following teams: the L.A. Lakers, Miami Heat, New York Knicks or any team that acquires Dwight Howard.
As of late, Arenas has had a decrease in production. Yet the clear-cut reason for this has been the lack of playing time he has received.
Since joining the Orlando Magic, Arenas has received an average of just under 22 minutes per game. This is easily the least number of minutes Arenas has ever played with a team. Just two seasons ago Arenas was playing over 36 minutes per game and scoring 22.6 points per game.
Yes, Arenas still has the talent.
His role with the Magic was scattered, as he would come in anywhere from four to six minutes and contribute with several buckets off the bench. In those 21 minutes, Arenas averaged eight points and 3.2 assists per game.
Currently, outside of All-Star Wade and starter Mario Chalmers, the Heat have just three guards that are yet to prove themselves as consistent threats off the bench. Mike MIller is yet to pick up his game, while Chalmers continues to struggle in his role as this team's point guard.
This preseason, Chalmers had a relatively poor showing, scoring just 11 points and dishing eight assists in two games. He has shown promise as an all-around player, putting up rebounds and steals as well, yet he has not been as strong as the team needs.
Make no mistake, if Arenas joins, he's a player that comes off the bench. Yet just having him as a threat off the bench is key for this Heat team that has its fair share of issues in the back-court.
Chalmers has shown his struggles early on, and having Arenas is essentially having an insurance policy off the bench. It would be a move that helps solidify a back-court in desperate need of strong guards in the rotation to give Wade and Chalmers breathers.
