WWE News: Latest on the Rock, John Cena, CM Punk and the WWE Championship

Drake OzDec 23, 2011

CM Punk is the WWE champion, Daniel Bryan is the world heavyweight champion. To many fans, all is right in the world.

However, in the back of your mind, you’re still worried that Bryan’s going to have a short title run and that Punk won’t be holding that WWE title come Wrestlemania.

The feeling is that WWE officials will freak out about ratings, have Punk drop the title and then put it on Cena for his match against The Rock.

So, will Punk or Cena be holding the prestigious WWE title come Wrestlemania?

Here’s the latest concerning that debate from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via SEScoops.com)

"

John Cena recently mentioned that his match vs. The Rock at WrestleMania would be even bigger if it was for the WWE championship. At the time he made the comments, WWE was strongly considered putting the title on Cena heading into WrestleMania.

The WWE title being on the line would make the match seem bigger and elevate the status of the WWE title. Additionally, if the title wasn’t on the line in this match, it doesn’t look great that the WWE title match would be billed as the #3 match on the show. That said, WWE is firmly behind Punk as champion and the Rock vs. Cena is already guaranteed to be a huge draw without the belt on the line.

"

That report sure seems like a lot of nothing, huh?

From what I gather, all this says is that there were once plans to put the WWE title on Cena heading into Wrestlemania. However, company officials are now confident that Punk can hold the belt through the pay-per-view.

It doesn’t seem to indicate, either way, which way the WWE is leaning at the moment. However, for my sanity, I sure hope that Punk—and not Cena—is the WWE champion come Wrestlemania 28.

My argument for that will always be the same: The Rock vs. Cena is a battle between two of the biggest stars in wrestling history. It will sell itself. It doesn’t need the WWE title involved to get fans interested in it.

Meanwhile, no one’s really going to care about a feud between Punk and Dolph Ziggler (or something along those lines) if the WWE title isn’t on the line.

Sure, the match will be fantastic, but casual fans and younger fans aren’t necessarily too worried about that. They just want to see matches that are for that big, shiny piece of gold.
