Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: More Posturing Is Bad Sign for Hopes of Super Fight

Michael DixonDec 21, 2011

It should never take this much public talk to get a fight to happen.

The more talk, the less likely it becomes that we'll ever see Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao square off, at least not while both are still relevant fighters.

Ultimately, it boils down to getting in the ring. Fans of each fighter will claim that the other is ducking their guy, but once they're in the ring, that makes no difference.

According to Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times, more posturing is taking place, this time from Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum.

Per Pugmire, Arum doesn't believe that the previously proposed date of May 5 gives enough time. Instead, he wants the fight moved back to June to allow for a special 45,000-person venue on the Las Vegas Strip to be built.

He even added this little gem.

"

"That's Cinco de Mayo, and too early...The last time I looked neither of these guys was Hispanic."

"

It's good to know that only Hispanic fighters, specifically Mexican fighters, can fight on Cinco de Mayo. I was not aware of that rule.

Does this rule apply to other sports? Can we ensure that when Wimbledon plays on July 4, that only matches with American players are scheduled? That actually might help an American to finally win that tournament.

But as humorous as the Cinco de Mayo claim is, it's the time claim that's really amusing. If May 5 is too soon, then June is too soon. If June works, then it can happen by May 5.

While I understand it's the de facto home of American boxing, this fight doesn't need to take place in Las Vegas.

If Arum wants space for more people, why not look at a football or baseball stadium? The fight could be outdoors. If he doesn't want it outdoors, there are plenty of indoor venues to look at.

The fact is that all of this is posturing. Fans want something on the table that guarantees that we'll see a fight. Neither man has anything left to prove in the sport except a fight against each other.

It's on Pacquiao and Mayweather, or their respective camps, to make this fight happen. If it does, the fans aren't going to care who caved in to whose demands.

There's nothing positive about anything that Arum said. It's just more public debate and another person with some authority on the matter telling us why the fight can't happen.

The more that happens, the more likely it is that this fight's not going to happen any time soon.

Mayweather will turn 35 in February, while Pacquiao just turned 33. If this fight is going to happen while both men are in their prime, it needs to happen soon. I'm not holding my breath.
