MLB Trade Rumors: Cincinnati Reds Trading Travis Wood to Chicago Cubs?

Chris RolingDec 20, 2011

The Cincinnati Reds are interested in Chicago Cubs left-handed reliever Sean Marshall according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Marshall is a solid reliever who posted a 2.26 ERA last season. He would fit nicely into the Reds rotation as a setup man. Marshall has one more year on his contract, earning $3.1 million this season.

Cubs team president Theo Epstein was interested in Reds pitcher Travis Wood when Epstein served as general manager of the Boston Red Sox last season.

Wood had a down season last year with a 6-6 record and a 4.84 ERA. He was demoted to the minor league twice last season because of his performance. Wood doesn’t have a definitive spot on the roster because of the recent acquisition of Mat Latos.

The Reds lineup as of now is Latos, Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Homer Bailey and Bronson Arroyo. Aroldis Chapman is also on the outside looking in as the Reds plan to use him as a starter as well. It is plausible that Wood wouldn’t see time as a starter this season so the organization views him as expendable.

Rosenthal believes other players will be involved in the deal, but none are known as of now.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty claimed after the acquisition of Latos that the club was going to continue to attempt to upgrade its pitching. This move is proof of Jocketty's intentions, and would add depth to an area of need for the club.
