Could Bo Pelini Be the Next Head Coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions?
According to the Harrisburg Patriot-News, Pelini was in contact with Penn State to discuss the possible open head coaching position. While the Harrisburg Patriot-News did say that Pelini was not a finalist for the job, the paper did state that Pelini was interested in the position.
Pelini told the Omaha World Herald that he did not contact Penn State and he was not interested in the position.
Pelini will not be the next head coach for Penn State, but this is not the first time Pelini has be rumored to be interested in head coaching positions.
When Ohio State announced they were looking for a new head coach, one of the first names to come up was Bo Pelini. Huskerextra.com reported that Pelini was interviewed for the job which went to Urban Meyer.
So, what can Nebraska fans make of the rumors about Pelini becoming interested in other head coaching positions? Is he really that anxious to leave Nebraska, or is it just a bunch of hype?
Bo’s brother Carl Pelini was rumored to have talked to Florida Atlantic University regarding their open head coaching position. When asked if he was interviewed for the position, Carl denied all of the reports. Two days later, the Florida Atlantic announced the school was in the process of finalizing an offer with Pelini.
I am not calling Carl Pelini a liar, but how does a coach go from not being interested in a job to being introduced by the school as their head coach in only two days?
Is Bo Pelini just following in his brother’s footsteps? I would not be surprised if one day Bo Pelini is questioned about a job, denies the report and a few days later accepts the position.
People often ask me why Bo Pelini would want to leave Nebraska. The simple answer is pressure from the fans.
Nebraska fans expect a lot out of their football team. Nebraska football is all Nebraska fans have to cheer for in the state. Over the years they have become more and more impatient with their team, they want results now. That includes adding championship trophies to their collection.
What makes the Nebraska head coaching position so difficult is meeting the fans' expectations. Recruiting players from Florida, Texas or California to come to Nebraska is no easy task. I think Bo Pelini knows that if he had the opportunity to go to another school, the recruiting process may be a lot easier.
Bo Pelini might think that the fans' expectations might be less, but I disagree. If he ever leaves for a top school the recruiting may be easier, but fan expectations would be just as high.
So, why would Bo Pelini be interested in the Penn State coaching Position? Who in their right mind would want to take on the job of restoring the Penn State name?
If Bo Pelini is interested in the Penn State job the only reason I can think of is for more money. Many Cornhusker fans would say that Bo Pelini would be a fool to leave Nebraska for more money, but how many of you wouldn't do the same?
Every year there will be open head coaching positions at prestigious universities and every year Bo Pelini’s name will be brought up in the conversation as to who will fill the open position. Nebraska fans must get used to the rumors and not be surprised when the day comes when Bo Pelini says “I am leaving Nebraska to become the head coach at………….”
