NBA Free Agency: Steve Novak Expected to Sign with the New York Knicks

Mike MoraitisDec 20, 2011

After being waived by the San Antonio Spurs, Steve Novak is firmly the target for the New York Knicks to sign for this season which starts on Christmas Day.

Novak, who battled injuries last season, is a sharpshooting, small forward with great size at 6'10" and would be a nice addition for the Knicks off their bench.

After Shawne Williams crossed the river to play for the New Jersey Nets, the Knicks will miss his presence off the bench as a defensive spark with good size and the ability to shoot the corner three when open.

The former Spurs forward should fill that role nicely for the Knicks, adding more offensive threats from beyond the arc for New York, as well as adding to the already impressive size the team currently has.

Novak still has to clear waivers, but judging from a tweet last night from his account, he fully expects to do so:

"Next stop…NY," tweeted Novak yesterday.

He has since deleted the tweet, probably realizing it was a bit premature and that there is, of course, no guarantee that he will actually clear waivers.

But if he does, expect Novak to be the latest member of the Knicks. New York has been extremely active the last few days, trying to piece together their roster with minimum-salary players, the most recent being point guard Baron Davis.

Novak will get the league minimum, leaving the Knicks their "room exception" unused and available for another signing if they feel the need.
