Does Tim Tebow's Success Prove NFL Coaches are Slightly Overrated?

David LevinDec 22, 2011

The smile is unmistakable. His passion, is undeniable. His ability is still a bit unproven.

And his desire is unwavering.

If every football player in the NFL went to battle with the same drive as Tim Tebow, then the millions of dollars these athletes make may just be worth its weight.

For better or worse, Tim Tebow, the Heisman Trophy and two-time National Championship winning quarterback from Florida is making everyone believe in him in ways that have not been seen before in this league.

ESPN devotes segments to him. Coaches and analysts talk about his strengths and weaknesses like he is the only passer in the NFL to win a football game.

And then there are the coaches who swear they could not draft him in 2010 because there were too many issues with his throwing motion, his delivery and the things in college that he did so well would not be so successful on the next level.

Tebow is proving those detractors wrong.

Does Tebow's success make them look a bit overrated? Maybe.

Does Tebow's success make these coaches look like they need to reassess their scouting of talent? Probably.

Tebow is a talent. No one denies that. He is not as polished as a Cam Newton and does not have the arm strength of a John Elway, the Broncos team president who knows a thing or two about playing quarterback in the NFL.

Today, coaches and scouts put such an emphasis on size, speed, skill set and ability. They want a rocket arm and a fluid motion.

While Tebow has the size and speed, he is working on the throwing motion and he will never have the arm Elway had as a pro.

If a player is a winner in high school and college and proves he can win on the professional level, then it erases everything coaches look for. The NFL is based on winning and losing, not how it is done. Tebow started out playing "ugly" and grabbing a victory from the jaws of defeat.

Now, in the last three weeks, he has played arguably the best ball of his pro career. And nothing has changed in the way Tebow approaches the game. So if it isn't broken and works, why not leave it alone and roll with it?

As coaches learn to adapt more to the player and not the other way around, then maybe Tebow's success makes for a growing trend in the NFL. There will be other quarterbacks who come out of the draft in the future that find ways to win. It may not be the best way, but honestly, as long as they get to the postseason, which I believe is every team's goal, then it should not matter how they got there.

And to think, Tebow led the way.
