5 NFL Teams That Need to Rebuild in Draft
Football is a young man's game. More often than not, a younger player with fresh legs can get the job done just as well or better than that of a seasoned veteran with an established name.
This season has exposed a lot of teams that are old, slow, and overrated in terms of talent on their roster. These teams simply need to "blow up" what they have established and rebuild though the draft. You can patch holes in free agency, but if you want long-term success, history shows that the teams that draft well enjoy contention every year.
Here are five teams that need to rebuild their teams through the draft.
Indianapolis Colts
1 of 5No team has been able to hide their flaws as well as the Colts, as Peyton Manning made this team look exponentially better than it really was.
This team needs help on the offensive line, defensive tackle, linebacker and in the secondary. They also will need an eventual replacement for Manning, which looks like Andrew Luck.
The Polians have "lucked" out in terms of getting an opportunity to draft great talent at quarterback, but what they do in Rounds 2-7 will be the real determinant as to whether the Colts can get back to prominence.
Jacksonville Jaguars
2 of 5After just missing out on the playoffs a year ago, this team has taken giant steps backward this season. Even though they spent a top-10 pick on a quarterback, they will have a tough time turning down someone like Matt Barkley after what they have seen from Gabbert so far.
The defense is solid and they have a star player in Maurice Jones-Drew, but this team has not had a real receiving threat in years. This team needs to blow up what they have, specially on offense, in order to get on the right track to contending in this division.
Washington Redskins
3 of 5Like the Jaguars, the Redskins have something established on defense. It's the offense that needs a lot of work.
Rex Grossman is nothing more than a stop-gap or backup quarterback at this point. I can certainly see them targeting a Matt Barkley or Robert Griffin III in the draft.
When you look at this offense, no one on the roster really poses a real threat to a defense. Roy Helu and Fred Davis are nice players, but especially at the receiver position, this team just lacks play-making ability. They also need help on the offensive line.
Cleveland Browns
4 of 5I like McCoy as a person, but realistically, I just don't think he is a long-term starter in this league. He just does not have the arm strength that forces defenses to respect the deep ball. If the Brownies want to compete in the AFC North, they must upgrade at this position.
Their offensive line needs a lot of help, especially on the right side. A big receiving target wouldn't hurt either.
Defensively, they have a lot of good, young pieces like Jabaal Sheard and Joe Hayden, but they are just on the field for way too long. Mike Holmgren must revamp the offensive side of the ball this offseason.
Philadelphia Eagles
5 of 5After what has been an extremely disappointing season for the Eagles, you won't see them making huge splashes in free agency again.
This team has a lot of star power, but as any personnel man will tell you, its not just the stars that make it work. It's the guys that do the dirty work and don't get noticed that really help you win football games.
For the Eagles, it starts on defense. Their linebackers are too inconsistent. Their horrendous safety play has totally negated the talent they have at corner.
Compared to the rest of the teams on this list, the Eagles don't have a lot of holes to fill. But they need to use the draft, not free agency, to fill them.
