Tim Tebow: Rabbi Goes to Ridiculous Lengths to Turn People Against Broncos QB

Adam WellsDec 18, 2011

The Tim Tebow legend continues to grow with each passing day. He is the biggest star in the NFL right now, which is shocking in and of itself, and anyone with a pulse wants to talk about him. One person who should have resisted the urge to talk about the Broncos quarterback is Rabbi Joshua Hammerman.

Rabbi Hammerman wrote a column for The Jewish Week in which he basically said that if Tebow has long-term success in the NFL and wins a Super Bowl that the people who worship at the foot of the second-year quarterback will become racist outlaws.

USA Today posted excerpts of the article, which was taken down by the Jewish Week Web site the same day that it was written. Here is the most outrageous part of what Rabbi Hammerman wrote:

"

If Tebow wins the Super Bowl, against all odds, it will buoy his faithful, and emboldened faithful can do insane things, like burning mosques, bashing gays and indiscriminately banishing immigrants. While America has become more inclusive since Jerry Falwell's first political forays, a Tebow triumph could set those efforts back considerably.

"

Reading this I was not sure whether to laugh at how moronic the whole thing sounded or be horrified that someone would actually be thinking all of this about a football player.

To me, it makes it sound like the Rabbi hears Tebow's preaching as a way to manipulate people into thinking the way that he does so that way they will grow intolerant of others.

But for anyone who has ever heard Tebow actually speak—and reading this mindless drivel I am not sure if Rabbi Hammerman has—he just wants people to believe whatever they want and make sure that they respect each other.

Even Tebow is fighting to earn respect from people in spite of the success that the Broncos have had with him as the quarterback, so I don't really see where the insanity would come from.

I mean, all the problems that Rabbi Hammerman mentions have been going on long before Tebow got here, and, unfortunately, they will still be going on long after he leaves.

Perhaps Rabbi Hammerman should be searching for ways to make the world a happier place instead of trying to find stupid reasons for why people will be intolerant of other people for their race, religion or sexual orientation.

If the worst thing that happens in this world in 2012 is Tim Tebow winning a Super Bowl, I think we could consider it a really good year.
