Prince Fielder: Will His Contract Approach Albert Pujols'?

Zak SchmollDec 15, 2011

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Prince Fielder is looking for a contract in the range of 10 years and $254 million. Of course, just because Albert Pujols got that kind of deal doesn't essentially mean that Fielder will be able to get the same type of contract.

Part of the reason that Pujols got such a huge contract is because of the future cash flows he will bring to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

For example, think of all of the ticket sales, commemorative T-shirts and general hoopla that will erupt as Pujols nears the end of his contract.

He should be approaching some very important milestones in his career. For example, he has played for 11 years, and he has 445 home runs already.

It is definitely not beyond possible that he is able to reach 700 or even challenge Barry Bonds for the all-time record.

How many people are going to want to see that? Everyone will want to be there and be a part of history.

The revenue streams are going to be fantastic, and even though Pujols will probably be making more money than he is worth by the end of his career, the income that he will be bringing in will help offset the costs.

I'm not trying to put down Fielder as a great first baseman. He has a huge bat that every team should want in the middle of the lineup.

However, there is a reason that Fielder will not be able to get the kind of contract that Pujols received, and that is simply because the future cash flows which Pujols will bring in as he approaches these milestones helped pay for part of this contract.
