Jerry Sandusky Scandal: Claims of Teaching Boys to Shower Are Most Absurd Yet

Mike ChiariDec 15, 2011

Accused child molester and former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky continues to maintain his innocence and has admitted to nothing other than showering with young boys.

His attorney is now claiming that Sandusky was merely teaching the boys proper hygiene techniques.

In an interview with ABC 27 News in Harrisburg, Pa., Karl Rominger—a new member of Sandusky's legal team—suggested that the only reason Sandusky showered with young children was so he could teach them to apply soap correctly.

Some of these kids don't have basic hygiene skills, attorney Karl Rominger said. Teaching a person to shower at the age of 12 or 14 sounds strange to some people, but people who work with troubled youth will tell you there are a lot of juvenile delinquents and people who are dependent who have to be taught basic life skills like how to put soap on their body.

"

Call me crazy, but for some strange reason I'm not buying this lame explanation. There have been a ton of strange things said and missteps taken by Sandusky and his legal counsel up to this point, but I think it's fair to say that this is the most ridiculous of them all.

Maybe these claims seemed like a good idea at the conference table, but Rominger's explanation came across as completely fake and contrived. I believe that troubled youths may not have basic hygiene skills, but I most certainly don't believe that an alleged child molester took it upon himself to climb into the shower with these boys and teach them how to bathe.

Sometimes silence is the best policy when it comes to maintaining innocence, and I think that Sandusky and his representatives have proven that to be the case. Sandusky came across as very strange and creepy in his interview with Bob Costas on Rock Center and nobody is going to buy these recent claims by Rominger.

Even if by some wild chance Sandusky was actually trying to teach these boys how to shower properly, he is still in the wrong for getting into the shower with them in the first place. The fact of the matter is that, if he was willing to shower with young boys, there wasn't much stopping him from sexually abusing them.

Sandusky's fate will ultimately rest in whether the jury believes his defense, but I have to believe that the general public is rolling its collective eyes at Rominger's absurd explanation at this point.

If Sandusky and his legal team continue to come up with these types of defenses, he likely won't stand a chance, even if his accusers don't turn out to be overly credible. Sandusky was already facing an uphill battle, but things simply continue to get worse for the disgraced coach.
