WWE News: Latest on Possibility of Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust at Wrestlemania 28

Drake OzDec 13, 2011

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Goldust has been pushing to wrestle his real-life half-brother Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 28.

Goldust—who’s been out of action for most of 2011 after undergoing shoulder surgery earlier in the year—continues to campaign for the match on Twitter, and there have been mixed reports on whether that feud will actually go down.

There is no new backstage update from anyone within the WWE about a potential Goldust vs. Rhodes match, since the latest report indicated that the match could happen but wouldn’t take place at WrestleMania.

But that hasn’t stopped Goldust from continuing to push for the match via Twitter.

"

Goldust continues to campaign for a match against his brother Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania. He is pitching a "Intercontinental Title vs. Career match" in a "Miami Street Fight" for the event, writing on his Twitter, "Theres a buzz goin round.....goldust vs cody wm28, miami street fight, my career his ic title. All in favor...@WWE give me my match."

"

My reaction: Why not?

I know many of you might be thinking that a match with Goldust at the biggest pay-per-view of the year is a bit of a letdown for Rhodes, but if he’s not going to be wrestling for the World Heavyweight Championship (which I doubt he is), then this is basically the next-best option.

Younger fans may not remember Goldust and therefore aren’t able to appreciate what he’s done for the wrestling business, but he was an integral part of the biggest period in wrestling history, the Attitude Era. In his own very unique way, Goldust is a WWE legend and probably a future Hall of Famer.

Goldust’s wacky gimmick may turn some fans off, but make no mistake about it—the guy can flat-out wrestle, and a match against Rhodes at WrestleMania has the potential to be one of those under-the-radar matches that really delivers.

Given that Rhodes is currently feuding with Goldust’s former tag team partner Booker T, the setup is already there for Rhodes and Goldust to meet somewhere down the line, and I certainly think they will.

The only question is: Will the match happen at WrestleMania 28

I’m of the belief that it should go down at the biggest pay-per-view of the year, because it would help Rhodes for his run with the Intercontinental Championship to approach The Honky Tonk Man’s record, and it would also be nice for nostalgic purposes to see him defend his title against his brother on such a huge stage.

Has Goldust started a petition for this match to go down? If so, I want to sign it.
