Metta World Peace: Ron Artest's New Name Looks Good in Purple and Gold
World Peace has descended on the Los Angeles Lakers.
Finally.
Ron Artest's name chance to Metta World Peace was one of the biggest (and by far the goofiest) NBA stories to emerge during the offseason, and Sunday has brought the debut of Artest's new jersey.
Check that, I should say that Sunday has brought the debut of World Peace's new jersey. Courtesy of FOX Sports West's Twitter feed:
There it is. Same number. Same colors. New name.
Truth be told, this is actually a little anticlimactic. When you think of a name liked "World Peace" adorning the back of a NBA jersey, you get certain notions. As soon as the name change became official, I started holding out hope that the reveal of World Peace's new jersey would come complete with singing angels and laughing children.
Instead, we get a grainy photo in which World Peace himself is totally unaware.
Damn.
Credit where credit is due, the jersey itself is just fine. I've been a Boston Celtics fan my whole life, but even I have a notion to go out and purchase one. Either that, or put it on my Christmas list. If I had a Christmas list, that is.
Meanwhile, I can't help but feel like this news should be bigger than it is. We may not have angels and laughing children, but surely the Lakers could have arranged some sort of press conference. They should want people to be excited about World Peace's new threads.
After all, it's not like the organization has any big trades to announce.
