UFC 140 Results: Jon Jones Will Remain Undefeated at 205 Pounds

Mike HodgesDec 11, 2011

Jon Jones put on another inspiring performance at UFC 140 against Lyoto Machida, reminding everyone why he is the most dominant 205-pound fighter on the planet.

Machida tested the champion in the opening round by maintaining his distance and utilizing his angles to get inside and land his shots. It was the first time Jones had faced any form of adversity, and at one point, he looked uncomfortable against the elusive Brazilian.

However, Jones forfeited the first round to Machida only to enter the second round and overwhelm the Brazilian by getting inside and utilizing his wrestling skills. Jones landed a right hand that rocked Machida and then secured a standing guillotine, which left his opponent unconscious, to retain the UFC light heavyweight title.

The win capped off a historic year for Jones. He competed four times and successfully defended the UFC light heavyweight crown twice. It is already considered by some critics to be the greatest individual run in mixed martial arts history. Jones now owns a professional record of 15-1.

Following his victory over Machida, Jones will be matched up against either Rashad Evans or Dan Henderson in his next bout. While many people believed Machida posed a stylistic threat to the 24-year-old, and he did fare much better than any of Jones' previous opponents, it is hard to imagine anyone else in the division ending Jones' title reign for the foreseeable future.

Henderson might have a puncher's chance, and Evans might hold an advantage from his experience training with Jones, but neither of them have faced an opponent with the rare combination of size, athleticism and skill that "Bones" possesses. Furthermore, Jones' skills are gradually improving and he gets better with every performance.

Jones' performance against Machida not only solidified his status as the best fighter in his weight class, but it also distinguished his superiority among the rest of the division, and signifying an unprecedented title reign.
