UFC 140 Fight Card: Lyoto Machida Brings Upset Intrigue to Jon Jones Bout
Jon Jones is pretty much a beast. So it's hard to fathom that he could lose the title that he so deserves, but that's where the promise of Lyoto Machida comes in.
This fight is all about possibilities, at least that is what will sell the bout to fans. I am inclined to hold hope that some of them come to fruition, but I know better in the end.
I have been captivated in what this bout could be, and I'm all in. Jones may be unbeatable, but we have heard such things before. You only need to dig further into Lyoto Machida's skills to realize that he poses a very real challenge here, at least more than Quinton Jackson did.
What we have here is a versatile fighter who has been lauded by just about anyone who has seen him fight against a counter-striker who will be as pesky as they come.
Jones will have a tough task in just getting him to the mat. Looming in the distance of things to worry about is the prospect of a one-punch sendoff for the light heavyweight champion.
Granted, Machida's bag of tricks is a far more scant than Jones', but he does possess power. If there was ever a fighter who could knock Jones out, or have him dazed following a swift blow to the chin, it would be Machida.
This is the part that interests me. Machida is the underdog who still has the talent to win this fight. It's the reason that UFC can trump most other pugilistic endeavors.
The parity here is insane. Jones is a beast who should wipe the floor with Machida and very well may, but I am invested as a fan simply for the possibility that this bout brings.
Never say never, because all it takes is one very possible blow to rearrange our thinking on the matter. Will Jones win? Probably. Could Machida pull off the upset? You bet.
This fight is bound to be far more enticing than you might figure, and that is what has me enthralled and hopeful that this could be one of the more memorable bouts of the year.
