Cotto vs. Margarito 2: Cotto's Lame Victory Won't Lead to Pacquiao Rematch

Adam WellsDec 6, 2011

Miguel Cotto finally got revenge on Antonio Margarito for his 2008 loss last weekend with a knockout victory. He looked like a dominant fighter, and he was, by far, the superior athlete in this bout, but to think that he actually proved anything and deserves bigger, better matches is insane.

Margarito is a shell of his former self. He is a broken, battered fighter who has problems seeing out of his right eye thanks to Manny Pacquiao's fists of fury last year. He is nothing anymore. This was the last big fight for him, and the only reason he got it is because of the controversy from their first fight three years ago.

So what did Cotto really earn by beating a fighter who is so obviously past his prime that it is not funny? Nothing. He did not prove anything by beating Margarito.

But, as Adry Torres of Fox Latino wrote, at least now Cotto can put the Margarito chapter of his life behind him.

"

"With much satisfaction he walked towards Margarito after the fight was called, savoring the moment. He stared at his opponent, gladly aware that he had finally gotten revenge and wouldn't have to deal with the memories from that night during their first fight in 2008.

'I don't have have anything to talk to him, you know. He has his own life. I have my own here. He can keep (on) with his life. I'm going to keep (on) with mine,' Cotto said.

'I just simply stood there to look at him. I simply stood to taste the victory. I don't know, if with the eye he had open, he looked at me.'

Cotto has moved on and is now entering another stage of his career."

"

Cotto does have another loss to avenge—against Manny Pacquiao. However, there is no reason at all to do that fight, and if his performance against Margarito is the best argument you have for another Pacquiao match, save your breath.

This is not to say that Cotto is not still a good boxer; we just don't know how good he is because he beat a fighter on his last legs.

Cotto needs at least one more fight before we decide whether or not he is ready for the big money fight against Pacquiao.
