Is Putting over Cody Rhodes the Best Use of Booker T in the WWE?

Matthew HemphillDec 6, 2011

It seems like Cody Rhodes is about to start a feud with Booker T on Smackdown.

This seems like it's being built up and that it might be something that lasts for a few months. If that happens Booker T most likely won't be used for commentary or, if he is, it will be sparingly.

Rhodes has been making waves with his new character and seems to be on the verge of something great if he can keep it going. Feuding with Booker T just might give him that final push into being a main event heel.

But is it the best use of Booker T's talents?

If it saves the fans from this kind of commentary, than yes it is.

Booker T still seems to have some talent left to give in the ring, and with that time being limited, it should be used to help young stars like Rhodes. Otherwise fans might have to continue seeing Booker interact with Michael Cole, and that is getting painful to watch.

Besides, it seems that Booker T has had some trouble adapting to a commentary role. The same kind of lines and statements that he has been making recently would be well received if he were wrestling, but for an announcer it gets a bit grating.

It may be that one day Booker will be good at that job; it isn't even that hard to believe. That day hasn't come yet and a part of it might be that he still feels attached to his wrestling persona.

With his showing in the Royal Rumble this year it isn't something to scoff at either. Booker T obviously can still work with the best of the WWE, and with his built-up reputation and his willingness to work with the organization (not just automatically demanding to be on top), he is the perfect candidate to work with mid-card heels.

Once wrestlers reach a certain age, as long as they have won over the fans either as a heel or a face, they will be loved no matter what they do.

It has happened with Roddy Piper, Ric Flair and even Ted Dibiase.

Booker T has earned the same adoration as these men and no matter what he does he will always have it.

That means that whatever Rhodes does to him will immediately draw ire from crowds and the fans at home. After all, he is beating on a man who had a supermarket brawl with Steve Austin and gave Attitude Era fans some of their favorite moments.

Trying to destroy a man who evokes such nostalgia in fans is an easy way to get heat and might just be the missing piece of the puzzle for Rhodes.

He has the look, he has the moves, and he now has the character; all he needs is the perfect foil to get the transformation to stick and it will work.

Beating a legend is the perfect way to do that. In fact, it's already been used by the WWE before.

They did it with Orton and it turned him from a cocky young upstart into a star. Even though he is now removed from the "Legend Killer" character, it was what made him a star.

And now the same treatment is being given to Cody Rhodes.

Let's hope it yields the same results.
