BCS Bowl Games: Oklahoma State's Magical Season Tarnished by SEC Hype

Gabe ZaldivarDec 5, 2011

Oklahoma State just finished a fantastic regular season that the Cowboys can savor for years, only they won't.

Let's get the SEC elephant in the room out of here quickly. I am one of the many who believe LSU and Alabama are clearly the best in the nation. That notion will be argued until the two teams fight once again in the title game a month from now.

However, I understand where the Oklahoma State Cowboys are coming from. Their plight is a special one because they did everything in their power to usurp Alabama for the No. 2 spot.

This should be a moment where their supporters laud their team for a job well done and look forward to a fine Fiesta Bowl matchup with Stanford, only they won't.

Their argument is too valid to ignore, and it will serve to tarnish the rest of what is left in this magical year. In an interesting turn, Cowboys faithful may be able to accept the Fiesta Bowl bid had their Oklahoma State not been so damn good this year.

I will go so far as to say that in any other year they would have been a shoe-in for one of the top two spots, but it just didn't shake out that way this year.

Oklahoma State's president Burns Hargis let his feelings known about the alleged snub. You can almost sense that he wanted to really let his emotions fly but opted for a reserved response. From a CBS Sports report.

"

I think there's some bias toward the SEC right now, and I think some of it is deserved just because of their winning the national championship so much recently. I'm sure there was some negative effect there.

"

His statement may have some merit as Oklahoma State trumped Alabama in the computer rankings but fell short in the Harris Poll and USA Today Poll.

The voters stated that they wanted a rematch over a Big 12 juggernaut. While I will still take Alabama as one of the two best in the nation, I have to say this is a score that would have only been settled by a playoff scenario.

The BCS once again proves it is only good for one thing, and that's controversy.
