Vince McMahon's Reaction to "The Wrestler"

Joe Burgett Dec 25, 2008

The new movie The Wrestler has been getting great reviews, even getting Golden Globe nominations. The critically acclaimed movie was attended by legends such as Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, and others on opening night.

But Vince McMahon had not seen it, and with all the attention it was receiving, he, of course, did not want to be left out. So he asked for a private screening of the movie from director Darren Aronofsky—and he got it.

So what was Vince's reaction to the film?

According to wrestlingtruth.com, "Whatever Vince told the director to his face remains a mystery. However, a source close to the WWE boss says, 'the word negative isn't strong enough to describe Vince's reaction.' [This is] no surprise because Vince's vision of the 2008 image of wrestling and even fading stars directly contradicts what The Wrestler accurately portrays."

And according to the site, McMahon's backlash was to be expected: "Others in Vince's close circle knew going into the screening that this was the kind of movie he was going to despise."

Of course, people knew Vince's reaction would be negative, but he is the one that came out and said wrestling was staged. Mikey Rourke played the part well and was terrific in the movie.

This movie has even gotten Oscar buzz and, as I mentioned, Golden Globe nominations. Rourke may be nominated for Best Actor while the film may garner Best Picture votes.

At its core, the film shows a wrestler in his decline and the trials and tribulations of the life of a wrestler.

Vince didn't like it because it shows the truth behind the scenes that some people, especially Vince, didn't want the public to see. The CEO of the WWE really didn't want a movie like this to come out.

It exposes him and everything he does for all to see. I am sure former wrestlers can attest to some of the things in this movie. Some wrestlers even cried while watching it because it was so emotional to them.

They knew that could have been or was them at one time. I personally want any and all to see it because it is a great and powerful movie. If you see one movie this year, or next year, see The Wrestler.

It should be in a theater near you soon, if it isn't already.
