NFL Power Rankings: A Look at the Top Team in Each Conference

Ryan PhillipsDec 5, 2011

We're one game from being done with 13 weeks of the 2011 NFL season and two teams have separated themselves as the best in their respective conferences.

Green Bay Packers

We all know the Green Bay Packers are the best team in the NFL right now. On Sunday, Green Bay outlasted the New York Giants and pulled out a 38-35 road win. The Packers are now 12-0 and have a very real shot at going undefeated.

For Green Bay, it all starts at quarterback and Aaron Rodgers is currently having what may be the best season for a signal-caller in NFL history. Rodgers leads an offense that ranks fourth in the league, averaging 405.3 yards per game.

The Packers also have the NFL's third-best passing offense (308.8 yards per game) and are averaging a league-high 35.0 points per game.

Meanwhile, Rodgers is also dominating individually. So far this season, the 27-year-old has completed 288-of-408 passes for 3,844 yards with an NFL-high 37 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Rodgers also leads the league in completion percentage (70.6), yards per attempt (9.42) and his quarterback rating of 125.3 is 19.4 points higher than second place (Tom Brady, 105.9).

Until an opposing defense can prove that Rodgers and his offense can be stopped, the Packers will remain the favorite to win the NFC and return to the Super Bowl.

Baltimore Ravens

While the Packers are the top team in the NFC, the Baltimore Ravens look like the top team in the AFC.

In Week 13, the Ravens smacked the Cleveland Browns 24-10 to improve to 9-3 on the year and earn their third straight win. They have done it with a defense that may be the best in the NFL.

Baltimore currently ranks third in yards allowed, allowing just 287.3 yards per game, and third in points allowed per game (16.0).

The Ravens have also been very balanced, ranking fifth in pass defense (198.6 yards per game) and second in rushing defense (88.8 yards per game). While that's a lot of statistics, the point is proven: Baltimore has a great defense once again.

As of now, the Ravens have the inside track to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Their offense is slowly improving and with their incredibly stout defense that will be very difficult to beat.
