2012 BCS National Championship: Reasons Alabama Shouldn't Get Rematch vs. LSU

Over the years, there really hasn't been that many reasons for people not to watch the BCS, let alone its national championship. Although they may be ranked as the top two teams in the standings, it is still ridiculous for two teams to play each other in the same season.

Even though it should be the two best teams, it should be two conference champions playing against each other. Oklahoma State did lose to Iowa State, but how tough have the Cyclones been this year? It hasn't been the normal "Big 123" doormat that it has been over the years.

Even though Alabama lost to the best team in the country, what makes their case as the second best team in the country?

During the much anticipated LSU/Alabama rematch, each team had a bye week, giving them both two weeks to prepare for each other and their great defenses. What did it have to show for all that prep time? That Saturday night game produced 15 points, 534 combined total yards and four turnovers. If anything, it was a rivalry game that people were looking forward to.

Is that what the country really wants? Do college football fans really want to see another five field goals kicked during sixty minutes of turnovers and a lack of offensive production? Neither team scored a touchdown in their Nov. 5th matchup and Alabama kickers combined to miss four field goals.

Over the years, college football fans have gotten a dose of one top defense and a high scoring offense in the BCS title game. Just a year ago, the title game in Glendale, AZ saw Auburn's defense shut down Oregon's video game offense for most of four quarters. Auburn would win on a field goal as time expires, just as LSU did in Tuscaloosa to beat Alabama.

The only difference is that the game in Glendale yielded nearly twice as many yards as the game in Tuscaloosa did. Most fans have become accustomed to high scoring games, or on the flip side, plenty of yards but enough defense to keeps scores to under a couple of scores.

The real title game should have put Oklahoma State's No. 2 scoring offense against LSU's No. 2 scoring defense. This may be the key year that people look at the current system and decide that a playoff system should be in place. If there is a rematch to be played, it should be determined through a bracket format, not through a computer system.
