Updated Suck for Luck Odds

Gary DavenportDec 4, 2011

Week 13 of the 2011 NFL season is winding down, and while there were a few surprises—such as the Miami Dolphins waxing the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett icing his own kicker—for the most part, the league's winners kept winning, while the league's losers kept on losing.

For those bottom feeders, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is the rights to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, so here's an updated look at their chances of landing the Golden Goose (Cardinal, whatever), with a focus on the teams that need him the most.

1. Washington Redskins

1 of 5

The Washington Redskins lost for the seventh time in eight games Sunday, falling 34-19 to the New York Jets, and given the sterling set of signal-callers the Redskins have in Rex Grossman and John Beck, there may be no NFL team more in need of an upgrade at the position than Washington.

4-9 is likely too good a record to land Luck straight up, but Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has never been bashful about making a splash, so you can bet Washington will at least kick the tires on acquiring the rights to the first-overall pick.

ODDS: 50 to 1

2. Miami Dolphins

2 of 5

If there's one "bad" team in the NFL that certainly can't be accused of giving up this year, it's the Miami Dolphins, as the Dolphins torched the Oakland Raiders in Week 13 and have now won five of six after dropping their first seven games.

The Dolphins have a need at quarterback and could actually be a playoff contender with Luck at the helm in 2012 (look at what Andy Dalton did for the Cincinnati Bengals), but they may not be able to offer enough to pry the first-overall pick from the team that lands it.

ODDS: 50 to 1

3. Cleveland Browns

3 of 5

The Cleveland Browns fell to 4-9 after a loss to the team that used to be the Cleveland Browns Sunday, falling 24-10 to the Baltimore Ravens and rubbing a bit more salt in the gaping wound that is life as a Browns fan.

The Browns need a franchise quarterback (sorry, folks; Colt McCoy may be OK, but that's all he is) and may actually be positioned better than any team on this list to acquire the rights to Andrew Luck via trade, as Cleveland owns a pair of first-round picks in next April's NFL draft.

ODDS: 25 to 1

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

4 of 5

Mired at 3-8, with a new owner and a soon-to-be new coach after firing Jack Del Rio, all the Jacksonville Jaguars need now is a shiny new franchise quarterback, because all Blaine Gabbert has done to this point in the season is turn the collective necks of Jaguars fans green.

Unfortunately, the best chance the Jaguars have of landing Luck is for the Indianapolis Colts to inexplicably win two of their next three games, setting up a one-week loser-take-all tankapalooza game Week 17 in Los Angeles...oops, I mean Jacksonville.

ODDS: 20 to 1

5. Indianapolis Colts

5 of 5

This just in: The Colts suck.

I know that not having Peyton Manning this year was a devastating blow for the Colts, but even the forehead may have been hard pressed to win 10 games behind a lousy offensive line with no running game and a defense that couldn't stop Oregon...State.

As heretical as it may sound, the Colts' best bet may be to draft Andrew Luck, trade (GASP!) Peyton Manning to a team that needs a quarterback and use the haul from that deal to address the myriad of holes in their roster, because simply put, this team needs blown up.

ODDS: No Bookie on Earth would take this bet.
