A Closer Look at the Teixeira Deal…

Kevin RozellDec 24, 2008

Mark Teixeira reached an agreement with the Yankees today, for a contract worth $180M over the next eight years. The Yankees pretty much stole him from the Red Sox, which makes this so much sweeter. The New York Post learned earlier today that Boston’s final bid for Tex was $168 million over eight seasons. So..the Yankees went $12 million more and snatched him away from them. Teixeira wants to win now, and that favored the Yankees over the Orioles and Nationals.

Mark also idolized Don Mattingly as a kid, which explains why he wears the #23 on his back. Tex got his wish of knowing where he would be before Christmas.  Mark is a big upgrade for the Yankees over Giambi. He supplies 30+ HR’s and 100+ RBI’s every year. He also brings a .290 career batting average along with him. He is a 1X All-Star, 2X Gold Glover , and a 2X Silver Slugger.

Now where does recently acquired Nick Swisher go? He can’t play first anymore, so does he go to the outfield? The Yankees main plans were for him to play 1st base, but things changed. They aren’t very excited about him in center field either. I don’t know exactly what his role on the team will be, and he may very well become trade bait.

Teixeira’s deal includes:

  • $5 million signing bonus
  • full-no trade provision

The Yankees now have the four players in the game with the biggest contracts:

Alex Rodriguez (10 years, $275 million)

Derek Jeter (10 years, $189 million)

CC Sabathia (7 years, $161 million)

Mark Teixeira (8 years, $180 million)

It’s a Festivus Miracle!
