Cotto vs. Margarito 2 Results: Cotto Must Ride Momentum and Fight Pacquiao
Miguel Cotto finally had his revenge on Antonio Margarito and convincingly destroyed him in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden. Now he needs to capitalize on that victory and fight Manny Pacquiao.
Cotto fought Pacquiao in a championship bout back in November of 2009 and lost in the 12th round after the referee stopped the fight because the Puerto Rican was so beat up and bloodied.
If he wants to seek his vengeance on Pacquiao for that beating, now is the time to do it.
Manny looks vulnerable right now after Juan Manuel Marquez narrowly lost to him in a split decision less than a month ago. The fight was extremely close and many pundits believe that the Filipino puncher may be past his prime and on the decline.
Cotto learned a lot from Pacquaio in his defeat to him and also by seeing how he beat up on Margarito. Pac-Man also badly damaged the Mexican’s eye and Cotto was able to work on that for the easy win. He’s now brimming with confidence and it seems like he is ready to take on anyone.
"“I won the fight,” Cotto said in a televised interview after he walked over to Margarito’s corner and stared at his opponent. “I just wanted to look at him and taste my victory on him. He means nothing to me.”
"
Now that the two have slaughtered a mutual opponent, Cotto and Pac-Man need to meet in the ring again.
It would be a lot closer than their first bout and would also be quite a bountiful fight for both fighters. They need to capitalize on the popularity of this latest outcome and keep Cotto in the ring against strong opponents who will be a big draw.
There is no bigger draw in boxing right now, with the exception of Floyd Mayweather Jr., than Manny Pacquiao.
Since those two aren’t going to fight, Cotto vs. Pacquiao would be a fine substitute.
