Week 13 Start Em, Sit Em: What to Do with Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Philip Rivers

Josh MartinDec 4, 2011

It's hard out there for a fantasy football owners looking for a competent NFL quarterback, what with guys like Caleb Hanie, TJ Yates and Luke McCown finding their way onto gridirons across America.

The task has grown even more difficult this season, with even many of the league's established signal callers performing with uncharacteristic inconsistency.

Like, say, these three guys.

SIT: Matt Ryan

Don't get me wrong—Matt Ryan has played very well of late, throwing nine touchdowns and racking up 301 yards per game over his last four outings.

Of course, those numbers all came against pass defenses that pale in comparison to Houston's. The Texans are second in the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns allowed and will have every reason to play out of their minds with TJ Yates assuming duties under center and the AFC South title well within reach.

In other words, don't expect Ryan to do much of consequence this weekend.

START: Tony Romo

Like Matty Ice, Tony Romo has been on fire in recent weeks, with 10 touchdown tosses and an average of 267 passing yards in the Cowboys' last four games.

Unlike Ryan, however, Romo is likely to keep his roll going, thanks in large part to the Cardinals' fantasy-friendly pass defense. True, Arizona has only allowed 12 total touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks, but their secondary is notoriously soft.

And with guys like Jason Witten, Dez Bryant and Laurent Robinson around, there's little doubt that Romo will come up with at least a score or two when all is said and done.

I could go on and on about why you should leave Phil Rivers off your roster this week—he's stunk all season, Norv Turner doesn't let him make plays, his receivers are banged-up, etc.

But the biggest reason, as far as Sunday is concerned, is Jacksonville's defense. The Jaguars are fourth in the NFL in passing yards allowed and sixth in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. If that weren't enough, Rivers figures to be on the turf more often than not, with the Jags' strong pass rush wreaking havoc on Stephen Schilling, (Marcus McNeill's replacement).
