NBA Rumors: Caron Butler Would Make Chicago Bulls Team to Beat in East

Adam WellsDec 1, 2011

The Chicago Bulls have little money to offer a premier free agent this offseason, but that is not stopping certain players from looking their direction because of the success they had last year, and because Derrick Rose can make anyone look great.

Which is why Caron Butler makes a lot of sense for this team.

Butler is very interested in both the Bulls and Clippers, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. The Clippers can give him more money, but the Bulls give him the best chance to win, and he will put up better numbers playing alongside Rose than anyone the Clippers put at the point.

Here is what Wojnarowski wrote:

"

Butler is most attracted to the Bulls because of the chance to play with Derrick Rose and compete for a title, but he would have to take significantly less money to play in Chicago. The Bulls have a stronger need for a shooting guard and could ultimately spend their money there. Ultimately, that leaves the Clippers with an edge over the New Jersey Nets among the suitors with the most significant cap space and a need for a starting small forward.

"

It is no secret that the Bulls need another scorer, and that Butler's greatest asset is his ability to put the ball in the hoop.

Butler's traditional position of small forward could scare the Bulls off, but it would not be hard to shift Butler from the three to the two and let him play alongside Rose in the backcourt.

This is going to be a critical season for the Bulls, who are coming off a 61-win season and a No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They have to prove to themselves that what they did wasn't a fluke and that they are taking steps to compete with the Heat and Celtics.

Butler would be a very big piece of the puzzle that was missing last season. He would make them a much greater threat than they have been in years.

The Bulls don't need another superstar to win a championship; they need an above-average complementary player who can score. If you look up "Caron Butler" in the dictionary, that is the exact definition you will find.
