Week 13 Start Em Sit Em: Stevie Johnson and Others You Must Start
Deciding who to start and who to sit for your fantasy team is a stressful weekly activity that can either pay off with a win or leave you saddled with yet another loss. With just one week remaining until most leagues start their playoffs, what you do this week could determine your team's ultimate fate.
With so much pressure, it's good to have a little help. That's what I'm here for, to provide you with four recommended starts for Week 13. May they prove useful to you and your team and assist you in snagging a playoff berth.
WR Stevie Johnson, Buffalo Bills (vs. Tennessee Titans)
1 of 4Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson has shown poor judgement at times in the past two seasons, but that doesn't mean he lacks talent, nor does it mean that he can't help your fantasy team this week.
Johnson had eight catches for 75 yards and a touchdown in his team's loss against the New York Jets in Week 12 and has 54 receptions for 622 yards and five scores on the year.
Now that the Bills are without star running back Fred Jackson for the rest of the season, the team will surely be running less, as C.J. Spiller is a far less dynamic rusher than Jackson and more valuable to the passing efforts.
More passes means more targets for Johnson, and with the Tennessee Titans fielding a defense that is weak against the pass, it should be a solid showing for the up-and-down wideout this Sunday.
RB Reggie Bush, Miami Dolphins (vs. Oakland Raiders)
2 of 4If you're in need of a player to install at the flex position this week, Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush may just be the smart start.
He'll be facing the Oakland Raiders and their 29th-ranked run defense, and while his touchdown streak ended at three games, that doesn't mean he won't have ample opportunity to score this Sunday.
Bush has 133 carries for 567 yards and four touchdowns and 35 receptions for 237 yards and another score on the year thus far. He's managed to take hold of the starting running back position despite flashes of brilliance from Daniel Thomas, and the team has found ways to make Bush relevant after an extremely quiet start to his season.
Though Bush is a risky start in some ways, putting him in the flex or giving him a go in a PPR league could pay major dividends for your fantasy team this week.
WR Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers (at New York Giants)
3 of 4On a team with so many talented targets for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson has managed to distinguish himself from his contemporaries enough to warrant him being a safe, every-week fantasy starter.
But some of Nelson's owners might have been put off by his low-scoring performance against the Detroit Lions in Week 12 that saw him catch just four passes for 26 yards.
However, that was a freak slump for a player who has been on fire in recent weeks. On the year, Nelson has caught 44 passes for 782 yards and nine touchdowns. He's about to meet a slumping New York Giants defense that has allowed 93 points and 895 passing yards in their last three games, all losses.
Don't let Nelson's low numbers in Week 12 deter you from giving him a start this week. He's primed to bounce back in a big way against a team that's vulnerable to big passing plays.
RB LeSean McCoy, Philadelphia Eagles (at Seattle Seahawks)
4 of 4Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was held to low numbers in Week 12 against the New England Patriots, rushing just 10 times for 31 yards and a score and catching four passes for 30 yards.
The team, playing from behind much of the way, decided to focus on the passing game despite Vince Young starting at quarterback in place of the injured Michael Vick.
Considering that the team's 48 pass attempts compared to just 17 run plays netted the team just 20 points and a loss, it is doubtful that the Eagles will base their offense on passing the ball when they face the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.
That means a good opportunity for McCoy to rebound nicely from his low-yardage day. McCoy has the third-most total yards from scrimmage of any player in the league this year, with 1,278. He's rushed 198 times for 1,050 yards and 11 touchdowns and has caught 38 passes for 228 more and another two touchdowns.
While the Seahawks defense is stronger against the run than against the pass, they're still capable of giving up major yardage to running backs, especially those as versatile and elusive as McCoy. He's one of the best backs in the league, and there's no reason to sit him based on his performance last week.
