NBA Free Agents: J.J. Barea Would Be Perfect PG for Miami Heat

Adam WellsNov 30, 2011

The Miami Heat were the talk of NBA free agency last season, and they will be closely monitored again this year, though they are not going to make a splash anywhere near the level of 2010. That said, there is one player that would fit in beautifully with what they need: J.J. Barea.

The biggest problem with the Heat last season is that they had no presence at the point guard position. They had no one to set up an offense that featured LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.

James and Wade are good enough to score on their own without having anyone set them up, but imagine how much better they would be—and the team by extension—if there was someone who knew how to handle the ball and brought a tough, physical mentality along with him.

Barea said over the summer that he wouldn’t mind playing with the Heat if things don’t work out with the Mavericks.

Considering how Barea burned them in the NBA Finals, it would not be a surprise to find that Miami has a serious interest in him if the price is right.

Price is the likely the biggest hurdle standing in the way of a deal.

The Heat only have about $5 million to offer any free agent, and Barea could get more than that if he wanted to. If he wants to win another championship, he could give the Heat a break and play alongside LeBron and co.

This is going to be an important offseason for the Heat because they know exactly what their biggest problems are and there are solutions to them available, but the financial aspect could hold them down.

Barea has the talent to fill the need that the Heat have at point guard. He has proven himself capable of handling the spotlight by torching them in the Finals last June, and can be the difference between this team being a perennial playoff contender and a consistent championship winner.
