UFC on Fox 2: Rashad Evans and Phil Davis Finally Set to Clash
Back in August at UFC 133, long-time No. 1 contender Rashad Evans was set toย take onย light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
The former training partners found themselves in a war of words and were set to give fight fans an exciting fight.
However, Jones was forced to pull out of the fight because of a thumb injury and up-and-comer Phil Davis filled in as Evans' opponent.
Evans was looking to cement himself as the top contender, while Davis looked to show his worthย as a light heavyweight by beating one of the best in the division.
However, a few weeks before the fight, Davis pulled out of the fight with a knee injury suffered during training camp and the exciting matchup was put on hold.
Evans went on to win via TKO against the Huntington Beach Bad Boy Tito Ortiz and was expected to be the next challenger for Jones' title, until a nagging thumb injury kept him on the sidelines once again.
The 32-year-oldย has technically been the No. 1 contender since defeating Quinton "Rampage" Jackson back in May 2010, but has been prevented three different times from a title shot because of injuries to himself, as well as then-champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Jones.
With Jones set to face Lyoto Machida at UFC 140, the champ insisted that Evans take on another opponent to prove his worth before given a shot at his title, and Jones has been granted his wish.
It was announced via ESPN.com that the matchup that fight fans should have witnessed last summer will now take place in January as Evans will face Phil Davis at the UFC's second card on Fox.
Now thatย both Davis and Evans are 100% healthy again, they will once again prepare to battle inside the octagon.
Davis has not fought since March when he defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to improve his unbeaten streak in the UFC to nine.
The fight between Davis and Evans will headline the event on January 28th at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
