BCS Bowls: What Happens If Houston or Oklahoma State Lose?

Dan VastaNov 29, 2011

There is only one weekend remaining in the regular season for all of the BCS haters to complain and to discuss a silly playoff, but there is also time for us to celebrate what has been a spectacular season.

Filled with chaos nearly every weekend in the month of November, what else can go wrong in December?

Of course, even if LSU loses to Georgia the worst they can fall to is number two so that is not the discussion. Instead, what on earth happens if Houston and or Oklahoma State lose?

If Cowboys and Cougars Both Lose

1 of 3

Obviously it all depends on the BCS rankings, but if Houston and Oklahoma State both lose there would not be as much chaos as if Houston were to just lose.

Reason being is that the Sugar Bowl will get the first selection (their money pick) since Alabama and LSU will be facing off for the title.

The Sugar Bowl has to decide who can make them the most money, however if the Sooners knock off Oklahoma State they will be forced to take Michigan because of how well they travel.

Michigan must make the Top 14 which should happen since there will be a loser between Michigan State and Wisconsin. Plus, Georgia is likely to lose though I admit they should keep it relatively close against LSU.

However, this is where the Sugar Bowl has to decide between two-loss teams Oklahoma State and Kansas State, along with a one-loss Boise State. TCU could sneak in if they do crack the Top 16 (I will explain next slide), but with the love that the computer rankings still have for the Cowboys, they would only drop to fifth.

The Sugar Bowl would take Michigan and then Oklahoma State after the Fiesta would select Stanford. Confused? Didn't think so!

Fiesta Bowl Only Other Scenario: Michigan 10-2 vs. Oklahoma 10-2

If Only Houston Loses

2 of 3

I have nothing against the Horned Frogs since they were the first ever team to defeat Chris Petersen on the blue carpet. However, the odds are not leaning towards TCU finishing in the Top 16 mainly because the BCS is acting as if they want nothing to do with TCU in a BCS Bowl.

TCU needs Baylor to lose to Texas on Saturday because the Horned Frogs lost to the Bears in the opener, and Robert Griffin III has been spinning it as good as any player on the planet in the big games.

If Baylor loses they would still need the Spartans and or Bulldogs to get embarrassed in their championship games on Saturday.

Everybody can voice their opinion, but the BCS is what matters at the end of the day and I tend to agree with them since we have had so many classics in previous years.

There is no way TCU can hop over Baylor, Michigan State and Georgia to crack the Top 16 unless a few blowouts or upsets occur. Obviously if Sparty wins, TCU could perhaps sneak by the Badgers which makes it obvious on who to cheer for.

Despite Wisconsin being favored, the Frogs have a better chance of passing the Badgers since they are just three spots ahead of them compared to Michigan State who is five slots ahead of them in the BCS.

Regardless, if Houston loses we will see either Boise State or TCU square off against Michigan (assuming they crack Top 14).

Sugar Bowl Scenario No. 2: Michigan 10-2 vs. Boise State 11-1 or TCU 10-2

If Cougars and Pokes Win, Michigan Miraculously Fails To Reach Top 14

If somehow, someway the Wolverines do not crack the Top 14, then all of a sudden Kansas State takes their slot. Technically Boise State or TCU could also come into play, but there is a decent chance that the Sugar Bowl is forced to take  BCS-caliber team to fill in their slot.

They need a large crowd to sell all of their tickets, and the Sugar Bowl may have more confidence in the Wildcats drawing a crowd then perhaps Boise State.

This is a lot to chew on, but it just goes to show how much is still at stake in the final weekend of the regular season.

Sugar Bowl Scenario No. 3: Kansas State 10-2 vs. Houston 13-0
