Week 13 Fantasy Rankings: Andre Johnson and Stars to Keep on the Bench

Adam WellsNov 29, 2011

The fantasy football playoffs are about to begin and it is time to start getting serious. You can't take chances on anything anymore if you want to walk away from your league with a championship and bragging rights for the next 12 months.

But the temptation to play some superstars is often too great for owners to resist. Don't be, especially if it is patently obvious that they are going to struggle mightily. You need to be bold and do what is in the best interest of your team, not letting names get in the way of actual performance.

So who are the star players that you need to keep on the bench in favor of other, more deserving players?

Here are three to keep in mind as you fill out your roster this week.

Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans

Everyone loves Johnson for the way that he plays and his unbelievable athletic prowess, but when the team he plays for is down to its third-string quarterback and trying out Jake Delhomme and Jeff Garcia, you know that there is not a lot of hope for any receiver on the Texans.

Plus, the fact that he missed six games is a red flag because it would have taken him time to adjust to the speed of the NFL and you don't have time to wait around for him to get back to normal.

Things are falling apart in Houston, and that means you have to make moves accordingly so that you don't get caught in a lurch.

Chris Johnson, RB Tennessee Titans

After a season that has been filled with disappointment, Johnson finally broke out in a big way last week against Tampa Bay with 190 yards on just 23 carries. Fantasy owners everywhere were rejoicing, but beware of false prophets.

Considering that Johnson has been such a disaster the previous 10 games, it is hard to believe that he is magically cured and ready to dominate now that the fantasy postseason is here.

The Buccaneers have one of the softest run defenses in the NFL, which undoubtedly contributed to his success.

A game against the Bills, who aren't exactly a powerhouse on the defensive side of the ball, is tempting, but don't be sucked in. Johnson will disappoint you again because he only plays when he wants to play.

DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Eagles

The diva of the Eagles' wide receiving corps is not exactly making a good impression on teams heading into free agency. His attitude has always been a problem, but when he was producing it was easy to overlook certain things.

Now that Jackson is starting to get a case of the "yips," he has lost what little fantasy value he had left and should spend the rest of the season on the bench.

Andy Reid is fed up with his act and effort, so much so that he actually benched him in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against New England.

Don't be sucked in by his speed and big-play ability. Just keep him out of your starting lineup and you will be fine.
