LA Galaxy Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts Traded to Montreal for Allocation Money

Jo-Ryan SalazarNov 28, 2011

Donovan Ricketts's days of playing goalkeeper for the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer are numbered.

The Jamaican international was traded to the Montreal Impact in exchange for allocation money, perhaps to secure the rights to Juninho or a replacement player for David Beckham should he leave the club, according to LAGalaxy.com.

Ricketts was responsible for helping improve the Los Angeles Galaxy's defense after allowing 62 goals in 2008. Named as an MLS All-Star in 2009 and 2010, Ricketts helped the Galaxy reach MLS Cup 2009 and MLS Cup 2011.

He made his MLS debut on April 11, 2009 against Chivas USA, and was named a finalist for the MLs Goalkeeper of the Year Award, playing in 26 of Los Angeles's 30 league games while recorded nine clean sheets.

2010 was Ricketts' most defining season. Playing 29 of the 30 league games, he recorded 11 shutouts and a 0.90 goals against average to be named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Injuries set back Ricketts in 2011, although he did make appearances early in the season and sporadically in goal in relief of Josh Saunders.

As a result of the trade, Ricketts will not be on the traveling party of players on the Asia Pacific Tour 2011.
