Every MLB Team's Funkiest Relief Pitcher
The junk baller, the veteran, the wildcard.
Every teams' got one, a crazy reliever that doesn't throw in the most conventional of ways.
While some sidearm, some submarine, and some throw over the top, but pitch the more unconventional pitches.
Most teams got em, a funky reliever that finds a way to get outs in the most interesting of ways.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Brad Ziegler
1 of 30This one's easy, Brad Ziegler has one of the weirdest deliveries in the game, and yet manages to have success despite throwing only 86 MPH on average.
Atlanta Braves: Eric O'Flaherty
2 of 30The Braves are loaded with pitching talent, so lets just take O'Flaherty for the hell of it.
He's not super funky, but that's probably for the best.
Baltimore Orioles: Chris Jakubauskas
3 of 30I really don't think the Orioles have any really unusual pitchers.
I just like the name.
Boston Red Sox: Alfredo Aceves
4 of 30Aceves wears number 91 to honor Dennis Rodman, what could be funkier than that?
Chicago Cubs: John Grabow
5 of 30John Grabow's been around a long time, without any overpowering pitches.
He's gotta have something funky going for him.
Chicago White Sox: Jason Frasor
6 of 30Frasor always finds a way to make things interesting and usually finds a unique way to get out of his numerous jams he finds himself in.
Cincinnati Reds: Bill Bray
7 of 30The Reds have a good quantity of unique relievers.
Lets go with Bray because it makes me think of a donkey's call.
Cleveland Indians: Tony Sipp
8 of 30Tony Sipp can throw any number of pitches from many arm angles.
He's a lefty, that's pretty funky.
Colorado Rockies: Rex Brothers
9 of 30The Rockies don't really have any really strange relievers, but lets go with Rex Brothers because his name is Rex.
I suppose most relievers are going to have some funky numbers pitching in the light air of Colorado.
Detroit Tigers: Jose Valverde
10 of 30He's a lights out closer, but he's a bit on the wild side.
That funkiness only adds to his mystique.
Houston Astros: Wilton Lopez
11 of 30Most relievers named Lopez seem to have somewhat unique deliveries.
Lopez delivers from about 3/4 and gets some weird movement as a result.
Kansas City Royals: Joakin Soria
12 of 30Joakim Soria's always lived a bit on the wild side.
Being on the Royals isn't always the most fun, but Soria's made the best of it so far.
Los Angeles Angels: Hisanori Takahashi
13 of 30Japanese pitchers always pitch a bit differently, Takahashi's delivery is relatively tame but he does have bit of a spin on the normal style of pitching.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Jonathan Broxton
14 of 30I know, Broxton isn't a Dodger anymore, but he needs to be mentioned nonetheless.
His physique is funky to say the least but it did allow him to steam the ball over the plate, at least, when he's on the mound.
Miami Marlins: Steve Cishek
15 of 30Not sure yet how Cishek's delivery is going to look on a poster, but he will be the funky fresh face of the new and improved Miami Marlins next year.
Milwaukee Brewers: John Axford
16 of 30His delivery isn't that weird, but rather its John Axford's whole persona that is appropriately "funky."
Minnesota Twins: Jose Mijares
17 of 30Gotta love Jose Mijares' whole persona.
Is whole routine during warmups, in addition to his mound presence is certainly funky.
New York Mets: Bobby Parnell
18 of 30I really wanted to say Turk Wendell, but he hasn't been on the team for a number of years.
I guess I'll have to go with the new closer of the future Bobby Parnell. I just can't help but think of Chris Parnell, or Steve Carell.
New York Yankees: Rafael Soriano
19 of 30I'm a big fan of Soriano, mostly because he's cool being a set up man.
While he's making a boat load of money, its kinda weird that he hasn't opted up.
Why he's funky, uh he hasn't been a Yankee for too long.
Oakland Athletics: Grant Balfour
20 of 30Grant doesn't have that weird of a delivery, but he's Australian, and he swears at himself while he's on the mount.
That kinds funky isn't it?
Philadelphia Phillies: Antonio Bastardo
21 of 30Gotta go with Bastardo, why?
That name for one.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Joel Hanrahan
22 of 30The fact that the Pirates even have a closer is funky.
Their team motto is to lose and trade away any decent players they have.
San Diego Padres: Heath Bell
23 of 30He won't be a Padres much longer, but Heath Bell is certainly their funkiest reliever.
San Francisco Giants: Javier Lopez
24 of 30Sidearm plus lefty = seriously hard to hit funky player.
Javier Lopez = Take opposing batters to funky town.
Seattle Mariners: Chris Ray
25 of 30Relievers with two first names are just different.
Chris Ray is the only Mariner that fits that description and is therefor their funkiest reliever.
St. Louis Cardinals: Marc Rzepczynski
26 of 30I've heard his name pronounced a correctly a number of times, but I can't ever seem to get it right.
Shep chin ski I believe.
Tampa Bay Rays: Kyle Farnsworth
27 of 30Farnsworth's been on so many teams, its so hard to remember why and where he's been.
Journeyman = funky.
Texas Rangers: Scott Feldman
28 of 30I've always had a soft spot for Scott Feldman, though I don't believe we're related.
His sidearm delivery was quite the key to the Rangers success in 2010 but not so much in 2011.
Toronto Blue Jays: Wil Ledezma
29 of 30Toronto is in Canada, and all of their distance marks are in meters.
Wil Ledezma is their funkiest reliever, mostly because they have a pretty bland set of relievers.
Washington Nationals: Tyler Clippard
30 of 30I just love the fact that Tyler Clippard was leading his team in wins for a good chunk of the season.
Its something about Tyler that encourages his team to score just enough runs to help Clippard get the win.
