Bernie Fine Fired: Why Silence Is Smartest Move for Former Syracuse Coach

Eric BowmanNov 28, 2011

Syracuse University has fired long time assistant coach Bernie Fine amidst allegations of sexual abuse, and it would be wise for him to keep quiet to avoid further damaging his image as well as the schools.

Speaking up and trying to defend himself right now would not end well at all. There is so much being thrown at Fine, which is why talking to the media may seem like a good idea, but he needs to stay silent for the time being.

Everybody remembers what happened with Penn State and Jerry Sandusky. His interview with Bob Costas made the former Nittany Lion look even more horrendous because of how he reacted and answered questions.

If Fine were to do a public interview (even over the phone), while he may be smarter than Sandusky, it doesn't mean things would go well. After all, reporters hit hard during huge scandals like this, and they could easily catch him off guard, which would spell bad news for all.

The sports world continues to be distraught over alleged sex abusers, and if both are guilty then justice must be served.

Fine, who had been with Syracuse for 36 seasons, was fired Sunday evening after a third accuser came forward saying he was molested by him in 2002.

It was the right move for Syracuse, especially after news broke that Fine's wife, Laurie, was caught on tape saying she knew her husband had issues

At first, it appeared that the first two accusers may have been lying, but with more and more information coming to light, the odds are stacking up against Fine.

This is why he should remain silent at the time, as talking would only do more harm than good. It's understandable people should would want to hear him speak right now, but he has to be smart and keep his mouth shut.

These are all accusations, and Fine believes he is innocent. He could go the Sandusky route by doing an interview claiming his innocence, but it would only lead to more trouble.

While Fine's case is much different from Sandusky's, it doesn't change the fact these are still serious claims against him, and he has to handle this properly. Sandusky rushed to speak, and he was ridiculed for doing it and sounding like an idiot.

The last thing Fine needs right now is to put himself in deeper water. Let this run its course, and there will be a time to talk to the public.
