Why Tim Tebow is Just the Hero the NFL Needs

Gary DavenportNov 27, 2011

Quarterback Tim Tebow once again led the Denver Broncos to a come-from-behind victory this week as the Broncos downed the San Diego Chargers in overtime. The second-year pro actually had one of his better statistical outings of the season, completing 50% of his passes for the first time this year.

Argue as much as you'd like about whether he can ever be an effective NFL passer or if he's setting back offensive football 25 years, but there's no denying that Tim Tebow has led the Broncos to four straight victories and back into the AFC West race. It's also impossible to deny that there is no other player as polarizing in the NFL.

What should appeal most to the powers that be in the National Football League regarding the strong opinions many people have about Tebow is the fact that these strong opinions are tied directly to his performance on the field. His appeal has nothing to do with his having stomped an opposing player on national television, getting arrested for manslaughter or dogfighting, griping incessantly about his contract, or any of the other unseemly issues that hover over the NFL in any given week.

Also, Tebow's image is so squeaky clean that it's almost irritating, so there's little chance that he's going to bring negative publicity down on the league. While there's very little doubt that "Tebowing" is irritating, his appeal has also become something of an Internet phenomenon and another source of positive press for the NFL.

You may hate Tim Tebow as a quarterback but some how, some way, he's getting the job done. Like it or not ,the "Tim Tebow Show" is the sort of programming that the NFL should count itself lucky to have, as painful as it may be to watch at times.
